Holistic Approach
Our approach takes into consideration a number of variables or “risk factors” that has caused someone to have a particular injury, and creates a health plan to address these risk factors. Take osteoarthritis of the knee, for example. If a patient attends Sportsmed Biologic for an interventional injection therapy to decrease local pain and improve function, it is vital that the patient is assessed for the various risk factors, which could have caused the knee osteoarthritis in the first place.
It is possible these factors have not been addressed.
These can include:
- Poor control / strength
- Issue with foot and limb biomechanics
- General daily physical and even mental overload
- Increase in visceral / general body mass
- Dietary issues
It is commonplace for interventional medical clinics to inject the knee and leave the patient with many risk factors not assessed and unaddressed. This ultimately can lead the patient to regression of pain and back to where they were. Our patient pathway at Sportsmed Biologic is structured and comprehensive, so that we ensure all your potential risk factors are addressed.
This way, we can provide you with a health plan for the best possible outcome from your injury and pain.
When patients attend to see one of our Sports Physicians for an interventional medical procedure, you will go through a coordinated pathway of care with both the Doctor and the Rehabilitation Coordinator.
Your initial consultation will be firstly with the Sports & Exercise Physician, followed immediately by the Rehabilitation Coordinator. This consultation will involve spending time reviewing all the results of patient questionnaires (outcome measures), the Doctor’s comments, and further assessment of your functional status and needs.
From there, the health plan is created to ensure all your risk factors are assessed, and issues are being addressed, to achieve the best possible outcome.
Rehabilitation FAQs
HOW LONG WILL MY APPOINTMENT TAKE WITH THE DOCTOR AND REHABILITATION COORDINATOR?
Usually we suggest you allow 60 minutes, to allow for a thorough assessment.
ARE THERE ADDITIONAL FEES TO SEE THE REHABILITATION COORDINATOR?
We have a set fee for patients having interventional care who see both the doctor and the rehab coordinator. The fees are however itemized so you can claim back on both medicare and private health.
DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING ELSE?
No, just what you would normally bring the doctor. You will have filled out some questionnaires either at home or in the waiting room.
WHAT IS THE REHABILITATION COORDINATORS QUALIFICATION?
Our Rehabilitation Coordinators are health professionals, being either a physiotherapist or an exercise physiologist.
WHAT IF I HAVE EXTERNAL ALLIED HEALTH CLINICIANS ALREADY LOOKING AFTER ME?
That is fantastic. Our Rehabilitation Coordinator works with the Doctor to devise a health plan, and they will provide all recommendations to your existing health care professionals. For example if you have an external physiotherapist and podiatrist - if you require follow-up then our rehab coordinator will refer you back to your team.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?
Your Rehab Coordinator will let you know what you need to do to make sure you give yourself the very best chance to treat your problem you have come to see us for. Our holistic approach is very unique to Australia, however it is very common overseas and in particular in countries such as Germany. You may have heard of AFL players travelling overseas to get special care for an extended period. This is a similar level and complete/holistic care model you will get at Sportsmed Biologic.
